Before you install the demo version of MiniCad, you should gather together all of the different disks that were sent to you. These include the four program disks and the three module disks. This is true even if you intend to install only one of the specific modules (because of space limitations, some items from one of the modules may be placed in a different module’s disk.)
There are different versions of MiniCad included in the installation disks. The default version will run on any Macintosh. In addition, there are separate versions for either the standard Macintosh (the 68k version) or the Power Macintosh. The installer will allow you to choose which version of the program to install. It will also allow you to choose which of the modules to install.
The “Easy Install” option will install the version of MiniCad that will run on any Macintosh. All of the external tools, commands, overlays, symbol libraries, sample files and the OverlayEdit application will also be installed. This method will use over fifteen megs of hard drive space.
The combined version of MiniCad (the version that will work on any Macintosh) is almost 5 megs in size. Many users won’t need the combined version of MiniCad installed in their hard drive. An example of a user needing the combined version would be someone that installs MiniCad on a portable hard drive so as to evaluate MiniCad on both types of Macintosh. The 68k version of MiniCad uses about 2.3 megs of space and the Power Macintosh version uses about 2.9 megs of space. If you don’t need both versions installed, you may want to do a “Custom Install” and install only the version you need. With the “Custom Install” option, any version of MiniCad can be installed. In addition, any combination of the three modules can be installed.
1 To install MiniCad, insert the disk labeled “Program Disk 1” into your floppy drive port.
2 Click on the Install MiniCad 5 Demo icon. The Installation dialog box will open. Unless you change it, the Installer will put MiniCad on the start-up hard drive. If you want the program to be placed on a different hard drive, click on the Drive button until the desired hard drive is active (the active hard drive is shown in the lower left corner of the dialog box.)
3 The Easy Install option is the default. To install the combined version of MiniCad and all of the modules and auxiliary files, click on the Install button.
4 If you want to do a custom installation, choose the Custom Install command on the installation pop-out menu. When that command is chosen from the installation pop-out menu, all of MiniCad’s different components are displayed in a scrolling list. The Resize box in the lower right corner can be used to enlarge the dialog box to display all the items. Clicking on the Help icon on the right side of the list will open a window that describes the corresponding item.
When a custom installation is performed, the Required Items checkbox must be selected. This will install all of the external tools and commands, a selection of overlays (which are the menus and tool palettes that are displayed on your screen) and the OverlayEdit application (which is used to create or edit the overlays.) If you are reinstalling the MiniCad demo (for example, to replace the combined version with the 68k version) you don’t have to select the Required Items checkbox.
5 When all selections are made, click on the Install button.
